How to Use This Tool

Enter your canvas width and height in centimetres, choose how many coats you plan to apply, pick an application style (thin, average or heavy), and select your tube size. The tool estimates roughly how much paint and how many tubes you might need.

How the Estimate Works

The calculator multiplies your canvas area by the number of coats, then divides by a rough coverage rate (millilitres of paint per square centimetre) that varies depending on whether you paint thin and efficient washes, an average layer, or a heavy, fully opaque application. This gives a starting-point estimate rather than an exact figure.

Why This Is Only an Estimate

Paint coverage varies enormously in practice: some pigments are naturally more opaque and cover more efficiently than others, canvas texture and priming affect absorption, and every artist applies paint slightly differently. Treat the result as a rough guide for planning how much paint to buy, not a guaranteed exact amount.

Tips for Buying Paint

If you are working with multiple colours across a canvas, this estimate applies per colour if you were covering the whole canvas in that colour alone — in practice you will usually use less of each individual colour since most paintings use several colours across smaller areas. It is generally sensible to buy slightly more than the estimate, especially for a colour you plan to use as a base coat or large background area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does this calculator do?

It gives a rough estimate of how much acrylic paint (and how many tubes) you might need to cover a canvas of a given size, based on your chosen number of coats and application style.

Is this an exact, guaranteed amount?

No. It is a rough starting-point estimate. Actual paint usage depends heavily on your specific paint brand, pigment opacity, canvas texture and how thickly you apply it.

What does "application style" mean?

"Thin / efficient" assumes light, economical layers; "Average" assumes a typical mid-weight coat; "Heavy / opaque" assumes a thick, fully covering layer that uses more paint.

Does the estimate apply per colour or for the whole painting?

The estimate is per colour, assuming that colour covered the entire canvas for the chosen number of coats. If you use several colours across smaller areas, you will typically need less of each individual colour.

Why does tube size matter?

The tool divides the estimated millilitres needed by your chosen tube size to suggest roughly how many tubes to buy, rounding up to a whole tube.

Should I buy extra paint just in case?

Yes, it is generally a good idea to buy a little more than the estimate, especially for background colours or base coats used across a large area.

Does this work for other paint types like watercolour or oil?

This estimate is written specifically for acrylic paint. Other paint types have different consistencies and coverage behaviour.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, this tool is completely free to use with no sign-up required.
