How to Use the RGB to HEX Converter

  1. Enter a value from 0 to 255 for Red, Green and Blue, either by typing a number or dragging each slider.
  2. The HEX result and colour preview update instantly as you adjust any channel.
  3. If a value outside 0–255 is entered, it is automatically adjusted to fit the valid range and a short note explains what changed.
  4. Select Copy HEX or Copy RGB to copy the value you need.
  5. Select Random Colour to try a new combination, or Reset to return to the default colour.

How the RGB to HEX Calculation Works

Each RGB channel is a decimal number from 0 to 255. To build a HEX code, each channel is converted individually into a two-character hexadecimal value, then the three pairs are combined into one six-character code.

  1. Convert the Red value to a two-character hexadecimal pair.
  2. Convert the Green value to a two-character hexadecimal pair.
  3. Convert the Blue value to a two-character hexadecimal pair.
  4. Combine the three pairs, in order, into a single six-character HEX code.

Worked example: RGB(74, 124, 89) converts to #4A7C59.

Why Artists and Creators Use RGB to HEX Conversion

Design software, colour pickers and web-based tools often work in RGB, while style guides, brand documents and CSS code usually use HEX. Converting between the two helps when you are documenting a colour palette for a client, preparing a digital illustration for the web, or matching a colour you found in an image-editing program to a code you can reuse elsewhere.

Remember that RGB and HEX both describe screen colour as light. For guidance on mixing an equivalent colour in real paint, see the Paint Colour Mixer.

Examples

rgb(74, 124, 89) → #4A7C59
rgb(232, 140, 58) → #E88C3A
rgb(255, 255, 255) → #FFFFFF
rgb(0, 0, 0) → #000000

Frequently Asked Questions

What is RGB?

RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue — the three colours of light that screens combine to produce every colour you see on a monitor or phone.

What is a HEX colour code?

A HEX colour code is a six-character code that represents the same Red, Green and Blue values using hexadecimal (base 16) notation, commonly used in web design.

How do I convert RGB to HEX?

Enter your Red, Green and Blue values above. Each channel is converted individually to a two-character hexadecimal pair, then combined into one six-character HEX code.

What happens if I enter a number above 255 or below 0?

The value is automatically adjusted to fit the valid 0–255 range, and a short message explains that the value was changed.

Can I use decimals for RGB values?

RGB channels are whole numbers. Decimal entries are rounded to the nearest whole number before converting.

Can I use the sliders and the number fields together?

Yes. Both controls stay in sync — use whichever is easier, and the other will update automatically.

Will this HEX code look the same on every screen?

Not necessarily. Screen calibration and colour profile settings can make the same HEX value appear slightly different from one device to another.

Can I use this tool to prepare a print file?

This tool converts between screen colour formats. For print planning, see the RGB to CMYK Colour Converter, which explains approximate ink percentages.

What is the difference between RGB and HEX?

They describe exactly the same colour information in two different formats — RGB uses three numbers from 0 to 255, while HEX represents those same numbers as hexadecimal pairs.

Can I use this tool to choose paint colours?

Yes, as a starting reference. Real paint colours vary by brand, pigment and opacity — the Paint Colour Mixer can help translate a digital colour into a physical mixing guide.

Is my colour data stored or sent anywhere?

No. All conversion happens directly in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server or stored.

Can I use this tool on my phone?

Yes. The tool is designed to work on mobile, tablet and desktop screens.

Why is my HEX code six characters long?

Each of the three colour channels (Red, Green and Blue) is represented by two hexadecimal characters, giving six characters in total.
