How to Use the RGB to HSL Converter
Enter Red, Green and Blue values (0-255 each), or use the Random Colour button, and the tool instantly converts them into HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness) and shows the equivalent HEX code.
What is HSL?
HSL describes a colour by its Hue (position on the colour wheel), Saturation (how vivid or muted it is) and Lightness (how light or dark it is), separating a colour's identity from how vivid and how light it is.
Why Convert RGB to HSL?
RGB describes how much red, green and blue light combine to make a colour, which is how screens work internally, but it is not very intuitive to adjust by hand. HSL makes it much easier to create tints, shades and colour harmonies from an RGB colour you already have.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is HSL colour?
HSL stands for Hue, Saturation and Lightness — a way of describing colour by its position on the colour wheel, how vivid it is, and how light or dark it is.
How does this tool convert RGB to HSL?
It applies a standard RGB-to-HSL formula: the maximum and minimum of the red, green and blue values are used to work out lightness and saturation, and their relative sizes determine the hue.
What range should Red, Green and Blue be?
Each of Red, Green and Blue should be a whole number from 0 to 255.
Why convert RGB to HSL instead of using RGB directly?
HSL separates a colour's identity (hue) from how vivid and how light it is, making it far easier to create tints, shades and colour harmonies by hand than adjusting RGB numbers directly.
Is the conversion exact?
Yes, RGB to HSL is a precise mathematical conversion with no approximation beyond standard display rounding.
Can I copy the result?
Yes. Use the Copy HSL or Copy HEX buttons to copy the corresponding value to your clipboard.
Does the tool save my colours?
No. All calculations happen in your browser and nothing is saved or sent to a server.
Is this tool free to use?
Yes, the RGB to HSL Colour Converter is completely free to use, with no account, sign-up or download required.
