Palette Namer

FREE ARTIST COLOUR TOOL

Palette Namer

Enter up to five colours from your palette and get a name for it, built from the closest standard colour names, plus each colour's individual match.

How to Use This Tool

Set each colour in your palette using the colour pickers or by typing a HEX code, then click "Name This Palette". Use the Add/Remove Colour buttons to work with anywhere from two to five colours.

How the Naming Works

Each colour in your palette is matched to its closest match from the standard list of 140 CSS colour keywords (the same list used in our Colour Name Finder), based on the shortest straight-line distance in Red-Green-Blue colour space. The matched names are then joined together to form your palette's name, for example "SeaGreen & Chocolate" for a two-colour palette, or "SeaGreen, Chocolate & Goldenrod" for three.

Why Name a Palette?

Giving a custom palette a name makes it easier to remember, discuss with other artists, and reference later when you want to recreate a mood or colour combination in a new piece. It is also useful shorthand when naming your own paint mixes or a small product line.

Using This With Your Other Palettes

Try feeding this tool the output of our Artist Colour Palette Generator, Monochromatic Colour Palette Generator, or any harmony tool to get a memorable name for the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Palette Namer do?

It takes the two to five colours in your palette and gives you a combined name built from the closest standard CSS colour name for each one, so you can refer to your palette by name instead of by HEX codes.

How does it choose a name for each colour?

Each colour is compared against the same list of 140 standard CSS colour keywords used in our Colour Name Finder, and matched to whichever keyword is numerically closest to it in Red-Green-Blue colour space.

How many colours can I name at once?

Between two and five colours. Use the Add Colour and Remove Colour buttons to adjust how many swatches you are working with.

What happens if two colours match the same name?

The tool only lists each matched name once in the final palette name, even if more than one of your colours happens to be closest to the same standard colour keyword.

Can I use this for naming paint mixes or a product line?

Yes, many artists and small shops use tools like this as a starting point for naming a custom palette, paint mix or product line, then adjust the wording to fit their own style.

Will the matched names be scientifically precise?

The matches are based on a standard mathematical distance calculation in RGB colour space, the same method used by our Colour Name Finder, so they are a consistent approximation rather than an official colour-naming standard.

Can I save the palette name I generate?

Yes, use the "Copy Name" button to copy the combined name, or the copy button under each swatch to copy its individual HEX code.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, this tool is completely free to use with no sign-up required.
